With a vast territory and heavily population, Chinese people in different regions have their own dialects which are different in pronunciation but almost identical with vocabulary and grammar. The differences of some dialects, especially those in Chinese northern and southern areas, are so big that it is hard for those people using different dialects to understand each other while they are talking. Dialects are regarded as one part of local culture, but the number of people who can use dialects decreases continuously. In order to encourage people to speak dialects, some local governments have taken measures like opening dialect class in the school, broadcasting dialectal programs on radio and TV, to protect the culture heritage.

Nowadays, Chinese is the native language used by the largest number of people in the world. One of the important differences between Chinese and western languages is that Chinese is made of characters rather than letters. Today, among all the writing systems in the world, Chinese is the most ancient one. InChina, people from different regions might not understand different dialects while they are talking, but it is not hard for them to communicate with each other because of the unified Chinese characters. Chinese language played an important role in the unity of Chinese nation in history. Currently, with the fast development of Chinese economy and the enhancement of the global influence, more and more foreigners begin to study Chinese.

Chinese idioms, mostly made of four Chinese characters, are a unique means of expression in Chinese. They are concise in content and fixed in form which can vividly express profound meanings. Chinese idioms mostly are from ancient Chinese literature works which may be related to some fairy tales, legendary stories or historical events. It may be very difficult to understand the implied meaning of these Chinese idioms if you are not clear about the derivation of them. Therefore, learning Chinese idioms may help people know more about Chinese culture because they are used widely in daily speech and literature creation.
