Listening Comprehension
Section A
Directions:
in this section,
you will hear two long conversations.
At the end of each conversation,
you will hear four questions.
Both the conversation and the questions will be spoken only once.
After you hear a question, you must choose the best
answer from the four choices marked A), B), C)and D).
Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet
1 with a single line through the centre.
Now you will haer the two long conversations
Conversation One
W: Tell me, Peter, what makes Harrods so famous?
M: Well, it`s the biggest department store in the UK.
And its food hall and Egyptian hall are very famous.
People come to Harrods just to see them.
W: What is special about the food hall?
M: It sells many different kinds of food.
For example, it has 250 kinds of cheese from all over
the world and more than 180 kinds of bread.
Customers also love all the different kinds of chocolate.
They buy 100 tons every year.
W: That`s amazing! And why is the Egyptian hall so famous?
M: Well, when people see it, they feel they are in another world.
It looks like Egyptian building from 4, 000 years ago and it sells beautiful objects.
They are not 4,000 years old, of course.
W: Is it true that Harrods produces its own electricity?
M: Yes, it does. 70%, enough for a small town.
To light the outside of the building, we use 11,500 light bulbs.
W: Really? Tell me, how many customers do you have on an average day?
And how much do they spend?
M: About 30,000 people come on an average day,
but during the sales the number increases to 300,000 customers a day.
How much do they spend? Well, on average,
customers spend about 1.5 million pounds a day.
The record for one day is 9 million pounds.
W: 9 million pounds in one day?
M: Yes! On the first day of the January sales.
W: Harrods says it sells everything to everybody everywhere.
Is that really true?
M: Oh yes, of course! Absolutely everything.
Questions 1 to 4 are based on the conversation you have just heard.
1.What is the food hall of Harrods noted for?
2.What does the Egyptian hall seem like to the customers?
3.What may customers find surprising about Harrods?
4.About how many customers come to Harrods on an average day?
Conversation Two
W: Hi, Kevin!
M: Hi, Laura, long time no see! What have you been up to lately?
W: Not much, I can assure you, and you?
M: Much the same except I do have some big news.
W: Come on! This suspense is killing me.
M: No, really, what have you been doing these past few weeks?
The last time I saw you, you were looking for a new job.
W: Well, that`s not exactly true. I was thinking about changing jobs.
Luckily, they offered me a new position in the accounting department.
M: A step up in the big business world.
W: I wouldn`t exaggerate, but I am pleased.
I had been hoping to get a promotion for a while.
So when it finally came through, I was relieved.
Actually, that`s why I was looking for a new job.
I just didn`t want to work there any more if they weren`t going to recognize my efforts.
M: Right, sometimes you can do your best and it seems like the others don`t know you exist.
I hope the money`s better.
W: I got a reasonable raise, now enough about me.
I`m dying to hear your news.
M: I am getting married.
W: No, you said you`d never get married.
M: That was then and this is now.
You`ve got to meet Andrea, She`s great!
W: This is all news to me.
I didn`t even know you were dating.
M: We weren`t. We`ve just been dating for two weeks now.
W: And you are getting married?
M: I know, I can`t help it.
I just know she`s the one.
W: Well, congratulations!
That`s fantastic!
M: Thanks, I`m glad to hear you feel that way.
Questions 5 to 8 are based on the conversation you have just heard.
5.What was the woman doing when the man last saw her?
6.Why does the woman say she was relieved?
7.Why is the woman surprised at the man`s news?
8.Who is the man going to marry?
Section B
Directions:
In this section,
you will hear two passages.
At the end of each passage,
you will hear some questions.
Both the passage and the questions will be spoken only once.
After you hear a question, you must choose the best
answer from the four choices marked A), B), C)and D).
Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet
1 with a single line through the centre.
Passage One
It seems to me that neighbors are going out of style in America.
The friend next door from whom you borrowed for eggs or
a ladder has moved and people there now are strangers.
Some of the traditional stories of neighborliness are impractical or silly,
and it maybe just as well that our relations with our neighbors are changing.
The saying in the Bible“Love thy neighbor” was probably a poor translation,
of what must have originally been, “respect thy neighbor”.
Love can be called up on order. Fewer than half of the people
in United States live in the same house they lived in five years ago.
So there is no reason to love the people who live next door to you,
just because they happen to wander into a real
estate office that listed the place next door to yours.
The only thing neighbors have in common, to begin with, is proximity.
And unless something more develops that isn`t reason enough to be best friends.
It sometimes happens naturally but the chances are very small
that your neighbors will be your choice of friends or that you will be theirs, either.
The best relationship with neighbors is one of friendly distance. You say “hello”,
use small talk if you see them in the yard.
You discuss problems as they arise and you help each other in an emergency.
The driveway or the fence between you is not really a cold shoulder but a clear boundary.
We all like clearly defined boundaries for ourselves.
Questions 9 to 11 are based on the passage you have just heard.
9.What does the speaker say about the relations among neighbors nowadays?
10.Why does the speaker say it may be difficult for people to love their neighbors?
11.What should neighbors do in the speaker`s opinion?
Passage Two
Water scooters are water vehicles that look very much like motorcycles.
Nowadays, speedy, colorful water scooters are gaining in popularity.
They can travel anywhere a small boat can and typically popular with young people.
The rising popularity of the craft has raised the question of water scooter regulation.
In this case, the argument for strict regulation is compelling.
Water scooters are a particularly deadly form of water recreation.
For example, two women were vacationing in Longboat Key.
While they were floating on a rubber boat along the shore,
a water scooter crashed into them and killed them. Also,
water scooter operators have been killed or
seriously injured in collisions with other water craft.
Others have been straddled at the sea when
their scooters either failed or sank far from shore.
Many water scooter operators are inexperienced and ignorant of navigational rules,
which increases the potential for accidents.
The increasing popularity of the scooter has aggravated the problem, providing
more water vehicles to compete for the same space.
Crowded water waves are simply an open invitation to disaster.
In addition to the inherent operational hazards of water scooters,
they are proven to be an environmental nuisance.
Beach residents complained of the noise of the scooters.
The Pacific Whale Foundation on the west coast expressed concern
that the scooters are frightening away an endangered species
of whale that migrates to Hawaii for breeding.
Regulations, such as minimum operating age, restricted operating areas,
and compulsory classes in water safety, are essential.
Without such regulations, tragedies involving water scooters are sure to multiply,
which makes many beaches unsafe for recreation.
Questions 12 to 15 are based on the passage you have just heard.
12.What does the speaker say about water scooters?
13.What is mentioned as one of the causes of water accidents?
14.In what way are water scooters said to be an environmental nuisance?
15.What does the speaker propose to ensure the safety of beaches for recreation?
Section C
Directions:
In this section,
you will hear recordings of lectures or talks followed by some questions.
The recordings will be played only once. After you hear a question,
you must choose the best answer from the four choices marked A. B. C.and D.
Then mark the corresponding letter
on Answer Sheet 1 with a single line through the centre.
Passage One
Now listen to the following recording and answer questions 16 to 19.
Coming on the heels of the larger shows in Los Angeles and Detroit,
the Washington Auto Show has carved out a niche as the one
that emphasizes new technologies,especially those
that cause less damage to the environment.
But with falling oil prices, the promotion of thriftier hybrid
or all-electric vehicles was somewhat muted,
shifting the auto show`s focus to connectivity and automatization.
Automotive engineering professor, Zoran Filipi,
says the technology in this Mercedes S-class model shows
that we are at the dawn of cars that almost drive themselves.
“It has lane-keeping ability,it has advanced radar-based system
to keep the vehicle`s speed also in sync with other vehicles
and this can completely alleviate your effort, driving effort,
in stop-and-go situations too, and finally the collision avoidance.”
Very soon we will see these technologies trickling-down to more
affordable models as car makers work to develop fully autonomous-driving cars.
In the meantime, says Filipi,
fuel efficiency has improved 20 percent over the last 10 years.
“This has mostly been achieved with advanced engine technologies- direct injection,
turbo-charging, coupled to very modern transmissions, eight, nine,
ten speeds that keep the engine running in the best possible region,”
Almost all new models have built-in display screens that connect
the vehicle to the driver`s smartphone and the Internet, helping in navigation,
taking voice commands, and sending and receiving messages.
“Therefore you can use all the applications you are used to,
everything that is tailored to your needs in your car and it`s very seamless,”
Larger manufacturers, such as Toyota,
say their all-electric fuel-cell cars are ready for the market
and the only obstacle is the lack of charging stations.
Others promote their hybrid gas-electric models,
saying that the number of charging stations is constantly rising
while the price of home chargers is dropping.
South Korean carmaker Hyundai even offers a lifetime warranty
for the battery in its top-of-the-line model,
hoping to make the hybrid car more attractive to customers.
George Putic, VOA News, Washington.
16.What`s the focus of the Washington Auto Show?
17.According to Fillipi, how much has fuel efficiency improved over the last 10 years?
18.Compared with the other two auto shows held in Los Angeles and Detroit,
What`s the feature of the Washington Auto Show?
19.What`s the only obstacle for all-electric fuel-cell
cars of larger manufacturers such as Toyota?
Passage Two
Now listen to the following recording and answer questions 20 to 22.
Climate change is not just a change in the global temperature;
it is also a change in weather.
Scientists say we can expect more extreme weather events along
with some areas seeing heavier rains and flooding while others will get hotter,
drier and more prone to drought and forest fires.
Climate change has a broad impact on health, both through the direct effect that
climate change has on extreme weather- heat waves
to heavy rainfall events and associated flooding,
coastal storms, hurricanes-but also indirectly,
in the way that it alters disease ecology,
or ecosystems that are important in maintaining a healthy environment.
One example is Lyme disease, which is caused by a particular type of bacterium
spread through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks.
A warming climate and changing seasonal temperatures have expanded the tick`s range.
We`re seeing more cases. We`re seeing it`s shifting northward and to the midwest,
that the case of distribution where we find the cases that`s linked to changing seasonal patterns.
Scientists are seeing more heavy rains in some regions, drought in others.
The rain can create flood plains where mosquitoes breed, and storms,
floods and droughts can create conditions conducive to clusters of water-,
mosquito- and rodent-borne diseases.
Scientists expect storms and floods to increase the spread of cholera in
developing countries as flooding creates contaminated water.
Other research concerns the spread of malaria.
A larger portion of Africa than previously predicted is now at high risk for malaria transmission,
according to a new University of Florida mapping study.
The research suggests malaria will arrive in new areas,
posing a risk to new populations and will require changes in managing public health.
The study also shows that some parts of Africa will become too hot for malaria.
Luber says part of what he does at the CDC is to help
communities prepare for the change, so people can take steps to stay healthy.
20.Which of the following is not the example of indirect impact of climate change on people`s health?
21.How many examples of disease is raised in this article?
22.Which of the following is Not true according to the passage?
Passage Three
Now listen to the following recording and answer questions 23 to 25.
Even though insects are a delicacy in some parts of the world,to many people,
the thought of eating them is downright disgusting.
“In the Western countries,
there is no culture of eating entire insects,
so then the idea is to use the protein in powder as an ingredient,
so then people might tend to receive better this protein,
even if they cannot see it.”
“There are many uses for the oils in general,
but we are investigating the use of these oils for a food,
as a food ingredient.”
The Mexican researcher,
working in the Netherlands, said insects are a great
source of heart healthy omega-3 fatty acids.
Fish are the main source of omega-3 oils, but environmentalists
say over-fishing is depleting the oceans.
Backing up the increased reliance on insects
is the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.
In a 2013 report, the UN agency endorsed the cultivation of bugs as a food source,
saying it`s environmentally-friendly and could boost the world`s food production.
Insects require little food to grow and experts
say they yield more meat per kilogram than other protein sources.
And there`s no shortage of protein-rich creepy crawlies,
which also contain fat, vitamins, fiber and minerals.
But not all insects produce good oil. Cockroaches don`t.
But researchers say different bugs provide unique tastes and textures.
“This is very liquid and it has a different color,
and this is semi-solid and it also has a more opaque color,
so this can be used as a dressing for example and it`s easy to use
and this can be used for example for pastry,
because for pastry you need hard fats.”
The bug oils must be tested to make sure they are safe to consume.
But getting over the “ick factor”may be a bigger challenge.
I`m Jessica Berman, VOA News.
23.Which is the main source of omega-3?
24.Why must the bug oils be tested?
25.According to the text, which is not contained by protein-rich creepy crawlies?
