The Brazilian government has begun a campaign against pension fraud, 

demanding that more than 100,000 people

 who are more than 90 years old prove they're still alive. 

All pensioners over the age of 90 will now have to re-register

 with the country’s Social Security Agency by the end of the year.

 Those who fail to do so would have their benefits denied.

 The authorities say that up to 30,000 pension claims

 have been made illegally in the name of dead relatives. 

Originally, the government has threatened to withdraw

 benefits immediately while the re-registration took place, 

but the idea was hastily withdrawn amid a hail of criticism.
