The Lantern stems from the East Han Dynasty inChinawhich initially was used as a lighting tool. In the Tang Dynasty, red lanterns were used to celebrate peaceful life and from then on, they gradually became popular in many placed inChina. The lanterns, in different shapes and sizes, are usually made with various colorful thin pieces of paper. As the red lanterns symbolize happiness and big fortune in Chinese traditional culture, they are suspended during many festivals like the Spring Festival, the Lantern Festival and the National Day etc.

The Lion Dance is a kind of Chinese traditional folk performance with a history of more than 2000 years. To perform lion dances, two performers always wear one lion suit to co-operate and imitate the movements of a lion, with one dancing with the head part of the suit, another dancing with the body and tail part of it. Because the lion is the king of beasts which symbolizes happiness and good luck, people always perform lion dance during the Spring Festival or some other festivals. Sometimes, the lion dance may also be performed in some other important situations like the opening ceremony of a store, the wedding ceremony etc., which may attract many audiences.

 剪纸是中国民间艺术的一种独特形式，已有2000多年历史。剪纸很可能源于汉代，继纸张发明之后。从此，它在中国的许多地方得到了普及。剪纸用的材料和工具很简单：纸和剪刀。剪纸作品通常是用红纸做成的，因为红色在中国传统文化中与幸福相联。因此，在婚礼、春节等喜庆场合，红颜色的剪纸是门窗装饰的首选。

Paper-cut is a Chinese traditional folk art with a history of more than 2000 years. It may probably originate from the Han Dynasty when paper was invented, and then paper-cut became popular in many places inChina. The materials and tools are simple in paper cutting as some pieces of paper and a scissor. People always use red paper as the material because “red” is the color associated with happiness in Chinese traditional culture. Therefore, most people may decorate the windows and doors of the houses with red paper cuts as their first choice in many festive situations like the Spring Festival, the wedding ceremony etc.

A Local Farm，A Vocal Advocate of Green Agriculture

   The past weekend saw an unforgettable visit to Jin Zhai, a local farm well-known for its green agriculture. As one of campus activities organized by the Student Union aiming to raise students awareness of sustainable development, it attracted 130 campus activists and achieved great success.

   The visit began at 9:30, June 2^nd after a brief welcome speech by the director of Jin Zhai. Students were shown around the vegetable gardens, stables, chicken farms and village houses. During the trip, students were encouraged to experience farm work like watering the plants and feeding chickens. The most impressive is how Jin Zhai developed green agriculture with the help of modern technology. For example, cow dung and chicken manure replaced fertilizer to reduce pollution to soil while labor was done by machinery to maximize production. Also, fruit trees were planted and fruits were sold via Internet. Besides, Wind power and solar energy became new sources of energy in both houses and farms. Everything is designed based on the principle of sustainable development.

     At the end of the one-day trip, the director of Jin Zhai extended an heartfelt invitation to students. It is time for young talents to contribute to ecological agriculture while enjoying a modern life in our beautiful farm, he said.        

lighten their youth with your care

   From June, 2^nd to June 7^th, twenty campus volunteers participated in a public service activity, known as “lighten their youth with your care”, organized by the Student Union. The activity, aiming to help the empty nest elderly people in our neighborhood to get back their youth, made the headline of China Youth News.

This activity began with a door-to-door visit by volunteers to old people who live alone. By establishing a trusting and friendly relationship with them, our volunteers figure out what empty nest elderly people really need to revive their youth. Then after a coordination meeting, the group decided on the best and most workable campaign to help them. On June 7^th, a party was held in our stadium, sponsored by three local enterprises, for all the elderly who would like to go back to their good old days, The stadium was decorated in the style of the 1980s and music of that era was played. Old people in this party sang their favorite songs, danced and exchanged their photos of youth. Even shy grandpas were happy to read a poem written by Chairman Mao. Volunteers served as listeners, photographers and service stuff in the party, deeply touch by the warm atmosphere.  

 This activity ended, but the implications are far-reaching. As the chairman of our Student Union said, only when you have a heart of kindness and care can you know the elderly really need.

 Where there is a Hope Elementary, There is a Way

On June 2^nd, 130 students representatives were invited by the Student Union to visit a Hope Elementary School sponsored by our university. This trip is to mark the 10^th anniversary of this school and celebrate its contribution to lifting locals out of poverty.

The headmaster of the school excitedly introduced the school history at the beginning of the celebration. Then the vice president of our university were welcome to give a speech, in which he call on both university students and elementary school students to crave knowledge and devote their youth to realizing the China Dream. Afterwards, all the participants visited the school museum where all the valuable moments were treasured in the forms of photos, files and documents. Visitors found collections of students letters exceptionally impressive. Those who graduated from this school wrote letters to report on their present life and work. All of them are grateful to the Hope Project and teachers enlightened their hope.

At the end of the one-day visit, student representatives took photos with local students. They said this tradition would be cherished and the hope will be passed on.
