Nowhere can we go in today’s information age if we are illiterate. Admittedly, our reading ability determines our performance in academic world as well as work places. In this sense, reading ability is of greater importance in modern society.

  To develop reading ability plays a significant role for all of us this day and time. First, the more vocabulary we accumulate via reading, the better we will understand the changing world. For example, even foreign elites begin reading Chinese books，or they feel ignorant. Second, in the process of reading, we gain an interesting perspective of observing life and ourselves, which is unlikely to be cultivated by meditations. Also, developing reading ability is like exploring the inner world of both readers and authors, which poses challenges to our communication skills.        

   Seeing that reading ability brings such great benefits, students can develop it through selecting suitable reading materials. I suggest criteria called “READ”, namely, random, enjoyable, alive and decent. Only through reading those materials can we gain knowledge and experience from lines of wisdom.

  No matter whether they take a job interview, apply for an overseas university, or participate in a research project, students are expected to impress others with their writing ability. In terms of their communication skills, integrating information and critical thinking, writing ability is growingly important.

  To develop writing ability is of greater importance for the reasons as follows. First, the more practice on writing, the stronger communication skills. After all, the ultimate purpose of writing is to make the author understood. Second, in the process of writing, students have to collect relevant information, put it in order and organize the structure logically, which is a great challenge to their ability of integrating information. Also, an impressive writing material contains the author’s reflection on life and innovative ideas, and thus  makes writing the essence of critical thinking.                 

   Seeing that writing ability brings such great benefits, students can develop it through simple exercises. I suggest a strategy called “LOVE”, namely, learn from great writers, organize materials based on writing purposes, view all the facts, and echo your main idea in various way. It is well-tried for students preparing for life-changing interviews and applications.

  Speech is more an ability in social interaction，academic exchange and working places than a human act, considering its impact on our personal development. That is the reason why more educators attach more importance to developing speaking ability.  

  To develop speaking ability brings at least three benefits. First, since speaking in public is listed the most fearful thing in most people’s mind, it is advantageous for all the people to cultivate their speaking skills so as to cope with interpersonal interactions. Second, employees are expected to possess good communication skills in today’s world where business must be done more through speaking on the phone than through writing. Therefore, good speaking ability brings more opportunity. At last, speaking involves clear explanation of one’s ideas and strong persuasive skills, which definitely makes a good speaker more successful in academic performance.          

   However, to gain more power in speech is not possible without long term practice . I suggest taking all the chances to speak, namely, in front of mirror, at dinner party, at presentation and recital. With confidence built, speaking ability is improved.
