M: Hello, and welcome to our program “Working Abroad”.
Our guest this evening is a Londoner, who lives and works in Italy.
Her name`s Susan Hill. Susan, welcome to the program.
You live in Florence, how long have you been living there?
W: Since 1982. But when I went there in 1982,
I planned to stay for only 6 months.
M: Why did you change your mind?
W: Well, I`m a designer, I design leather goods, mainly shoes,
and handbags. Soon after I arrived in Florence,
I got a job with one of Italy`s top fashion houses—Ferregamo.
So, I decided to stay.
M: How lucky! Do you still work for Ferregamo?
W: No, I`ve been a freelance designer for quite a long time now. Since 1988, in fact.
M: So does that mean you design for several different companies now?
W: Yes, that`s right. I`ve designed many fashion items for a number of Italian companies,
and in the last four years,
I`ve also been designing for the British company—Burberrys.
M: What have you been designing for them?
W: Mostly handbags and small leather goods.
M: How has fashion industry in Italy changed since 1982?
W: Oh, yes. It`s become a lot more competitive.
Because the quality of products from other countries has improved a lot.
But Italian quality and design is still worldfamous.
M: And do you ever think of returning to live in England?
W: No, not really. Working in Italy is more interesting.
I also love the Mediterranean sun and the Italian life style.
M: Well, thank you for talking to us, Susan.
W: It was a pleasure.

M: What excites you about drama?
W: Well, I find it`s a communicative way to study people and you
learn how to read people in drama. So usually I can understand
what people are saying even though they might be lying.
M: That would be useful.
W: Yeah, it`s very useful for me as well.
I`m an English lecturer, so I use a lot of drama in my classes such as role plays.
And I ask my students to create mini dramas.
They really respond well. At the moment,
I`m hoping to get onto a Ph.D course.
I`d like to concentrate on Asian drama and try to
bring Asian theatre to the world`s attention.
I don`t know how successful I will be, but here`s hoping.
M: Oh, I`m sure you`ll be successful.
Now, Claire, what do you do for stage fright?
W: Ah, stage fright! Well, many actors have that problem.
I get stage fright every time I`m going to teach a new class.
The night before, I usually can`t sleep.
M: What? For teaching?
W: Yes. I get really bad stage fright.
But the minute I step into the classroom or get onto the stage,
it just all falls into place. Then I just feel like:
Yeah, this is what I mean to do. And I`m fine.
M: Wow, that`s cool!

Passage One
Western doctors are beginning to understand
what traditional healers have always known that the body
and the mind are inseparable. Until recently,
modern urban physicians heal the body,
psychiatrists the mind and priests the soul.
However, the medical world is now paying more attention
to holistic medicine, which is an approach based on the belief that
people`s state of mind can make them sick or speed the recovery from sickness.
Several studies show that the effectiveness of a certain drug
often depends on the patient`s expectations of it.
For example, in one recent study,
psychiatrist at a major hospital tried to see how patients could be made calm.
They divided them into two groups:
One group was given a drug while the other group received a harmless substance
instead of medicine without their knowledge.
Surprisingly, more patients in the second group showed
the desired effect than those in the first group.
In study after study, there`s a positive reaction in almost
one third of the patients taking harmless substances.
How was this possible? How can such a substance have an effect on the body?
Evidence from a 1997 study at the University of California
shows that several patients who received such substances
were able to produce their own natural drug, that is,
as they took the substance their brains released natural
chemicals that act like a drug. Scientists theorized that the
amount of these chemicals released by a person`s brain quite
possibly indicates how much faith the person has in his or her doctor.

Passage Two
In January 1989, the Community of European Railways presented
their proposal for a high speed pan European train network,
extending from Sweden to Sicily, and from Portugal to Poland by the year 2020.
If their proposal becomes a reality,
it will revolutionize train traveling in Europe.
Journeys between major cities will take half the time they take today.
Brussels will be only one and a half hours from Paris.
The quickest way to get from Paris to Frankfurt,
from Barcelona to Madrid will be by train, not plane.
When the network is complete,
it will integrate three types of railway line,
totally new highspeed lines with trains operating at speeds of 300 kilometers per hour;
upgraded lines, which allow for speeds up to 200 to 225 kilometers per hour,
and existing lines for local connections and distribution of freight.
If business people can choose between a three hour train journey from
city center to city center and one hour flight,
they`ll choose the train, says an executive travel consultant.
They won`t go by plane any more.
If you calculate flight time, check in and travel to and from the airport,
you`ll find almost no difference.
And if your plane arrives late due to bad weather or air traffic jams or strikes,
then the train passengers will arrive at their destination first.
Since France introduced the first 260kilometer per hour high
speed train service between Paris and Lyons in 1981,
the trains have achieved higher and higher speeds.
On many routes, airlines have lost up to 90% of their passengers to high speed trains.
If people accept the Community of European Railways` plan,
the 21st century will be the new age of the train.

Hi everybody. As I said in my State of the Union address,
we live in a time of extraordinary change—
change that`s affecting the way we live and the way we work.
New technology replaces any job where work can be automated.
Workers need more skills to get ahead. These changes aren`t new,
and they`re only going to accelerate.
So the question we have to ask ourselves is,
“How can we make sure everyone has a fair shot at success in this new economy?”
The answer to that question starts with education.
That`s why my Administration has encouraged states to raise standards.
We`ve cut the digital divide in our classrooms in half.

Today`s auto mechanics aren`t just sliding under cars to change the oil;
they`re working on machines that run on as many as 100 million lines of code.
That`s 100 times more than the Space Shuttle.
Nurses are analyzing data and managing electronic health records.
Machinists are writing computer programs.
And workers of all kinds need to be able to figure out
how to break a big problem into smaller pieces
and identify the right steps to solve it.
In the new economy, computer science isn`t an optional skill
—it`s a basic skill, right along with the three “Rs.”
Nine out of ten parents want it taught to their child in schools.
Yet right now, only about a quarter of our kinder
to 12 schools offer computer science.
Twenty two states don`t even allow it to count toward a diploma.
So I`ve got a plan to help make sure all our kids get
an opportunity to learn computer science,
especially girls and minorities.
It`s called Computer Science For All.
And it means just what it says giving every student
in America an early start at learning the skills
they`ll need to get ahead in the new economy.

Can you imagine? Now let`s,
we can see that`s a traditional Native American.
Now I just want to change that guy`s race.

let`s get your picture with the black guy.
Right? Like, seriously, nobody would do this.
It baffles the mind. And so Zig, being Indian,
likewise it baffles his mind. His favorite photograph,
my favorite photograph of his, which I don`t have in here is
an Indian taking picture of white people taking pictures of Indians.
So I happen to be at dinner with this photographer,
and he was talking with another photographer about a shooting that had occurred,
and it was on an Indian reservation.
He`d taken his camera up there to photograph it,
but when he got there, he discovered he couldn`t do it.
He just couldn`t capture the picture.
And so they were talking back and forth about this question.
Do you take the picture or not?
And that was fascinating to me as a game designer,
because it never occurs to me,
like, should I make the game about this difficult topic or not?
Because we just make things that are fun or, you know,
will make you feel fear, you know, that visceral excitement.
But every other medium does it.
So this is my kid. This is Maezza,
and when she was seven years old,
she came home from school one day,
and like I do every single day,
I asked her, what`d you do today? So she said,
We talked about the Middle Passage.
Now, this was a big moment.
Maezza`s dad is black,
and I knew this day was coming.
I wasn`t expecting it at seven.
I don`t know why, but I wasn`t.
Anyways, so I asked her,
How do you feel about that?
So she proceeded to tell me,
and so any of you who are parents will recognize the bingo buzzwords here.
So the ships start in England, they come down from England, they go to Africa,
they go across the ocean that`s the Middle Passage part
—they come to America where the slaves are sold, she`s telling me.
But Abraham Lincoln was elected president,
and then he passed the Emancipation Proclamation,
and now they`re free.

Now listen to the following recording and answer questions 23 to 25.
Certain large investment firms have established freedom from connection.
But we as people never do,
and we`re not supposed to,
and we shouldn`t want to.We are individuals,
obviously, but we are more than that.
So here`s the thing about changing the world.
It turns out that`s not even the question, because you don`t have a choice.
You are going to change the world, because that is actually what the world is.
You do not pass through this life, it passes through you. You experience it,
you interpret it, you act and then it is different.
That happens constantly.
You are changing the world. You always have been,
and now, it becomes real on a level that it hasn`t been before.
And that`s why I`ve been talking only about you and the tension within you,
because you are not in a cliched sense, but in a weirdly literal sense, the future.
And, after you wa`lk up here and walk back down,
you`re going to be the present. You will be the broken world,
and the act of changing it in a way that you haven`t been before.
You will be so many things,
and the one thing that I wish I`d known and want to say is,
don`t just be yourself. Be all of yourselves.
Don`t just live. Be that other thing connected to death. Be life.
Live all of your life. Understand it, see it,
appreciate it. And have fun. Thank you.
