The Sri Lankan president Chandrika Kumaratunga has
gone on television to explain why she sacked 3 government
ministers and suspended parliament
this week while the Prime Minister was out of the country.
Ms. Kumaratunga said the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe
had put Sri Lanka’s security in grave danger.
She accused him of allowing the Tamil Tiger rebels
to take advantage of peace talks to reinforce their military position.
“All that the president has done last Tuesday is to
take back the powers that are unquestionably and rightfully
accorded to the president by the constitution,
from a minister to whom these powers were handed over
in good faith, after these powers were
exercised with callous irresponsibility.”
